The money

The official currency of Croatia is the kuna - abbreviated to HRK; and 1 kuna is divided into 100 lipa. The word ‘kuna’ is Croatian for marten – a weasel-like mammal; and was named as such because of the use of marten pelts as a form of payment in medieval trading. ‘Lipa’ means linden (lime) tree, traditionally planted around marketplaces in Croatia. The kuna has been in use since 1994 and is issued by the Croatian National Bank. The Croatian Monetary Institute mints the coins, made up of various metals and alloys.
