The official currency in Tonga is pa’anga - abbreviated to TOP. 1 Pa’anga is subdivided into 100 seniti. The term ‘hau’ refers to a denomination of 100 pa’anga but is not used in everyday life. In Tonga the pa’anga is referred to as ‘dollar’ in English. The pa’anga is not convertible and is pegged to the AUD, NZD, USD and JPY. The pa’anga – issued by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga - was introduced in 1967 and replaced the pound. The most commonly used bills for the Tongan pa’anga are the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 notes.
